In the 1930s, Rehoboth Bay had over 3000 acres leased for oyster harvesting. By 2015 there were no natural oyster beds remaining in the bay. Today, just one year since Rehoboth Bay Oyster Company was formed, we have over 400,000 oysters in the bay, and with bimonthly planting of additional spat, we hope to reach our maintenance level of 500,000 by the end of this year. This large scale reintroduction of oysters into Rehoboth Bay , with its still pristine waters, sandy bottom, and high salinity – promises to restore it’s historic reputation as the producer of the finest oysters in the Mid Atlantic.
The pristine waters, sandy bottoms, and high salinity of Rehoboth Bay combine to yield a clean, sweet tasting oyster with a pronounced salty aftertaste. An aggressive schedule of tumbling produces an attractively clean oyster, free of barnacles and marine growth, and of relatively uniform shape and size. Year round harvesting guarantees an uninterrupted and consistently dependable supply of superior quality Rehoboth Bay oysters. As the only oyster growers docked right on Rehoboth Bay, our oysters are the absolute freshest you can find. We can harvest to order with a days notice and maintain refrigerated inventory of a variety of our product.
